Traders Wonder at Dano Cool Cow’s Absence
Speculations have continued to trail the diminishing shelf presence of the once popular Dano Cool Cow. On the average, seven out of every eight shops visited by M2 open market survey did not have the milk brand in stock.
Traders have adduced different reasons for this. Emeka at Rauf Aregbesola Modern Market, Iyana-Ipaja, points out that the scarcity has been on for some while and contends that it may be a deliberate ploy by the brand owners to increase prices based on the popularity of the product; “Since its introduction it has actually enjoyed a lot of patronage and I think the company wants to take advantage of that to increase the price.” Many other traders agree.
However, at Agege Market, Alwell holds a different opinion. He thinks that the manufacturers may be withholding the milk brand in order to push the newly introduced choco variant and so prefers to describe the development as a “tactical but temporary withdrawal”. He continues that, “About two weeks ago they asked us not to sell the instant milk alone but to mix it with the choco variant so that whoever buys the instant milk will automatically buy the choco.”
Augustine, also a trader at Ipodo Market, Ikeja, is not interested in the reasons for the scarcity but discloses that it has affected prices as the 12g sachets sell above the standard N10 “when you see it at all.”
