Toilet Soap: Lux and Joy Lead on

A survey of the markets by M2 shows that Lux and Joy, long standing brands of toilet soap from Unilever Plc and PZ Plc respectively, remain market leaders of that segment amidst the avalanche of brands presently in the market.

Most traders who spoke to M2 at various markets visited insist that the two brands remain market leaders. However the traders could not say which of the two is doing better.

At Ojuwoye market, Agatha, a trader, could not rate the two brands. “I can’t really say. Two of them are definitely doing better than the other brands,” she says, adding however that the white variants are the most patronized.

At Ipodo, Segun Adediran, another trader, could also not say which one of the two enjoys more patronage. “If customers are not buying Lux then it is Joy,” she says.

At Ikotun Mr. Uwem Bassey, a businessman whose opinion the magazine sought says, “They are the same thing as far as I’m concerned; for me it depends on my mood and what is available at the moment.” Both Lux and Joy sell for N45 per unit depending on location.

However, Obinna, another trader at Iyana-Ipaja, gives his opinion on why the white variants sell faster. “Some people use it for purposes other than bathing or washing clothes,” he says. Other contenders in the market include Eva, Zenta, Riya and Imperial leather, among others.
