Spices: Ducros Others Take over the Market
M2 market survey of last week reveals that Ducros, Gino and Tiger brands of spices have taken over that segment of the market which sources say used to be ruled by Lion spices.
In most markets visited, traders who spoke to M2 say that Lion is no longer enjoying as much patronage as it used to a few years back as consumers now root for the newer brands.
At Ikotun main market, one Mr. Longinus, a dealer on assorted seasonings and spices, says, “The one people buy more these days is Ducros followed by Nora.” But for Mr. Kenneth, another trader at the same market, after Ducros it is Gino spices. According to Kenneth, “Lion lost the market leadership when people started complaining that the quality has dropped from what it used to.”
At Ojuwoye market, Madame Chinyere, who deals with food spices, also said Ducros is currently enjoying the most patronage. She was, however, uncertain as to which brand between Tiger and Nora ranges of spices is selling faster. She says, “Consumers buy more of Ducros; but the other ones are equally moving, though not as much as Ducros.” For another trader identified as Mummy Dami, “It is what I will sell and get my money back fast that I stock. So the spices you see on my shelf are the ones that are moving fast,” she said. A look at her shelf shows a display of Ducros, Tiger and Gino brands of spices.
