Sanusi’s Utterances Worry Shareholders -Joseph Ekeng
Stakeholders in the banking sector have expressed concern over the comments and activities of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Sanusi Lamido, fearing that it could do more harm to the banks than good.
The President, Progressive Shareholders Association of Nigeria (PSAN), Boniface Okezie said recently in Lagos that Sanusi’s utterances seem aimed at destroying the nation’s banking industry.
He noted that the London show was not properly conceived because the CBN’s aim was to go and sell the five troubled banks on the streets of London.
Okezie maintained that the idea could backfire because most of the banks were owned by foreigners prior to government indigenisation policy, stressing that they should not be returned to foreigners since the country has capable hands to bring them back to profitability.
CBN has since denied the claim which was widely reported in the local press. Sanusi said that his mission to London was clearly to explain why he sacked five top bank CEOs last month to foreign investors.
