NUJ Condemns NBC’s Decision on Radio Licenses in Lagos

Following the recent announcement by the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) that it will no longer grant radio broadcasting licenses to any intending license owner in Lagos, the Chairman of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Lagos Chapter, Wahaab Oba, has expressed his reservations on the issue.
In a chat with M2, Oba who describes the decision as difficult to justify, points out that the NUJ does not support the decision. “What we seek for in this union is freedom of speech and free access to information. However, this new decision will not allow for that and that is why we are against it. Besides, in this modern age of development, it baffles us that NBC can claim that Lagos airwaves is jammed.”
He also goes on to say, “I hope their decision does not have any political undertones to it because mere listening to the reasons given by the NBC shows that their position is difficult to justify. Hence, we implore that they reverse this unpopular, undemocratic and ungodly decision.”
The NBC recently announced that it will no longer give licenses for the operation of radio stations in Lagos State because the airwaves are jam-packed.
