NBC DG Cautions on Radio War, Breach of Law

Following reports on altercations between Freedom Radio and Kano State Radio, Engr. Yomi Bolarinwa, Director General of the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC), has warned all broadcast stations on the repercussion of such activity.
Stressing that it was unprofessional, the DG said such activity was likely to cause tension among their listeners. “Every true professional and true patriot knows the basic concept which demands that we use broadcasting to influence society positively, setting the agenda for the social, cultural, economic, political and technological development of a nation, for the public good. It would however be a breach of the law if any radio station broadcasts offensive content that could cause rifts.”
Warning that NBC will not fold its arms and allow any station to disrupt the peace in the country, Bolarinwa said, “On no account would the commission accept any breach of the provisions of the law, and I emphasize that the Commission would not hesitate to enforce these provisions when it becomes necessary.”
In obeisance to the DG’s call for appropriate work ethics, the stations’ executives pledged to operate within the ambit of the broadcasting code and the law. They also made a firm commitment not to use their radio stations for broadcasts that could breach the peace.
