Uncommon Leasing Businesses Thrive at Mile 12 Market
M2 visit to the popular Mile 12 market in Ikosi-Ketu LCDA reveals some rather strange leasing businesses thriving in the market said to run practically round the clock.
M2 gathered that due to the location of the market which serves as discharging point for goods coming into Lagos from the northern part of the country, Cotonu and neighboring western states, activities in the market run almost 24 hours.
This situation according to market sources there, has created a flourishing leasing business for some people who make a living by providing ‘Atupa’(Yoruba name for locally fabricated kerosene lamp) on lease to night traders who according to sources practically take over the market lanes and also to some shop owners who do not have power supply in their shops.
According to Mr. Amadi Ukoji who let M2 into this, the lamp provide illumination for the wares to enable potential customers have a better view of what they want to buy. Mr Amadi said, “The lease runs from 8pm to 3am and goes for N50 per lease.
In addition, Mr. Amadi who appears to be very aware of activities in the market points out another leasing business thriving there. According to him, due to the nature of the market which M2 observed was very dirty and rough, some other people make a living off leasing rain boots to callers at the market during the rainy season. He said, “Now they are not available because it has been dry for some time now but as soon as the rains return fully they would resume business.
