Internet Scammers Target GTB Account Holders
Internet scammers are targeting bank account holders in Nigeria. Last week, they targeted accounts holders of Guaranty Trust Bank with an email requiring them to disclose personal details, normally confidential between the customer and the bank.
M2 contacted the bank and the spokesperson, Lola Odedina, quickly advised that the mail be ignored as it did not originate from them. Her emailed response emphatically denouncing the email read in part: “This is a fraudulent and scam mail and did not originate from GTBank.”
The email aroused curiosity and M2 promptly contacted the bank for clarification, since banking entails a personal relationship between the customer and the bank. Supporting this time hallowed position, Odedina further stated, “GTBank will not ask you (customers) to reveal your (their) personal and confidential banking details such as PIN and Password.”
It seems that unrepentant internet scammers that rode on the platform of the Interswitch- powered ATMs to defraud many bank account holders, compelling the banks to join forces with Interswitch to mount public awareness campaigns, are now resorting to individual banks.
GTBank does not only denounce the fraudulent email, it counsels that it should be disregarded. Interswitch, on its part, warns on the internet that “Fraudsters are fishing for prey. Interswitch will NEVER ask for your PIN or Card details.”
