Enugu Rebrands, celebrates Centenary
As Enugu turns 100 years, preparations are in place to renovate the State. Already, the State government, spearheading the 100 years anniversary celebration, will be launching a centenary anniversary logo, which will kick off the celebration, scheduled to start this month to end in December.
According to Chief John Nwodo, Chairman of the Enugu State Centenary Celebration Committee, the government is making use of this opportunity to turn the state into a legislative archive. “We are going to store all the hazards from all the nine Houses of Assembly that make up the old eastern region in the Eastern House of Assembly so that from now on and into the future anyone who wants to study about how laws were made in this part of the country has a research point to go to,” he said.
Also, effort is being made to renovate the old Eastern Premier’s Lodge, and to dramatize that Dr. Nnamdi Azikwe, Eyo Ita and Michael Okpara were premiers of the Eastern region. The water front in the Miliken hill and several other sites are also going to be refurbished.
In hundred years of existence, Enugu has been the colonial headquarters for the eastern region; the headquarters for the East Central State, Post Independent eastern region and the eastern states; and the state capital of the old Anambra State and now Enugu State. It is still the headquarters of the geopolitical zone called the South East of Nigeria.
